Citizens,
When I turned on the news today & I saw that the Boys and Girls club in Jefferson county was closing, all I could do was put my head in my hands. The fact is that there is no funding to continue the Program. School Superintendent Bill Brumfield ( My World History Teacher no less) Tried to calm the issue by saying "Parents do not need to panic, if the school board allows us to do it, we will continue on, we won't miss a beat" He also said the school district in Jefferson County will use the remainder of the 21st century funding to run the programs there, but the cash could run out by July, at which point they'll try to find other ways to fund an after school program according to the WCTV website.
Now I understand that on the surface this may seem like a school board issue but if you think about it, It is really the entire county's issue. Whether the person is of voting age or not, it is the county's job to make sure that these people are safe and have a safe haven to go to after school. Now I have all the faith in the world and stand behind Superintendent Brumfield 225%, however I hope that the County Commission will step up and attempt to assist the School Board in securing if not another program, creating one for the children of the county to attend after the school day concludes. This subject is of high priority to myself as I would hope the entire commission.
Stay Safe Citizens,
Scott R. Goodlin
Jefferson County Commission District 4
